Find out how crowns can provide your damaged teeth with the ultimate protection.

Just as a doctor puts a splint over a broken finger to protect it, our Eau Claire, WI, dentist, Dr. Christopher Poss, places a dental crown dental crownsover a tooth that is weak or damaged to prevent further damage from occurring. Of course, damaged teeth do not heal like a broken finger can, but placing this tooth-shaped restoration over the tooth will ensure that it is strong and durable once again for the long run.

Crowns are probably one of the most versatile dental restorations available. While crowns are most often used for restorative purposes they can also provide cosmetic benefits, as well. Think about it: if you have a tooth that’s discolored or malformed, having our Eau Claire general dentist place a crown over the tooth can also greatly improve its appearance so it doesn’t impact the overall look or shape of your smile.

A dental crown may be necessary if:

  • You have a tooth that is damaged by decay, an infection, or trauma
  • You have a tooth that is weak from excessive wear and tear or teeth grinding
  • You have to get root canal treatment
  • You have a dental filling that can no longer support the tooth
  • You need to support a dental bridge (to replace a missing tooth)
  • You need to cover a dental implant (to replace a missing tooth)

When you come in either for a cosmetic consultation or for your six-month cleaning, we will be able to examine your smile and determine whether a crown is truly the best approach for improving the health, function, and even the appearance of a tooth.

In order to get a crown, several things must happen. If there is decay or an infection present this needs to be treated first. In order for a crown to fit over a tooth, the tooth will need to be shaved down in order to make room. This requires extensive tooth enamel removal, which will be performed under local anesthesia so you won’t feel a thing.

Then impressions are taken of the tooth to get the exact measurements needed for a dental lab to create your crown. In the meantime, we will place a temporary crown over the tooth to protect it until the permanent crown has been made. It can take up to one week to get your dental crown. Once the crown has been fabricated, you will come back to our office to check the look and fit of the crown before cementing over the tooth.

If you are dealing with a tooth that is cracked or fractured this is a dental emergency that you need to get treated right away. This is when you should turn to our dental office in Eau Claire, WI. We will provide you with the immediate dental care you need to preserve your smile for the long run.

Are you wondering whether your smile could benefit from this popular restoration?dental crowns

More than likely you already know what a dental crown is. This structure is designed to look just like a natural crown of a tooth; the only difference is that it’s completely hollow so that it can easily fit over a tooth. Why would a crown need to fit over a tooth? Our Eau Claire, WI, dentist, Dr. Christopher Poss, is here to explain.

Sometimes, despite all our best efforts, something happens to one or more teeth. Maybe your tooth was cracked, chipped or fractured while playing sports. Maybe taking antibiotics for many years has left you with some serious yellowing stains. Perhaps you didn’t come in every six months for routine cleanings and now you are faced with needing a root canal to treat an infected pulp. In most of these cases, a dental crown can help improve the health of that tooth.

When a tooth becomes damaged or weak, it is susceptible to more damage if left untreated. Think about a porcelain vase. If you crack or chip the vase you may find that the more often you use it the worse the crack gets. What was once a small insignificant crack has grown considerably, making the vase practically unusable. A tooth is much the same way. If you damage it and don’t treat it, you risk further and irreparable damage to the tooth. To protect it, our Eau Claire, WI, general dentist will place a dental crown over it to act as a stronger, more durable outer layer.

Dental crowns are custom-made restorations because not everyone has teeth that are the exact same shape or size. Crowns need to be tailored to each individual person’s smile. In most cases, patients opt for porcelain or tooth-colored crowns because they look the most like real teeth. Before you get your crown we will go through a color guide to choose the proper shade of porcelain to match your smile. Impressions also have to be taken so that the dental lab has your exact tooth measurements from which to create the perfect restoration.

Once your tooth has been filed down and is ready for the crown, we will place it over your tooth, check the fit and your bite, and then cement it into place. With the proper care, crowns can last up to 10 years or more before ever needing to be replaced.
